The term 'nimcel' refers to people who have gained fame or influence within a small, specialized community on social media, creating content that caters to the interests of their audience. As someone who has a love-hate relationship with social media, I find it fascinating that these individuals have the power to make something positive out of these platforms, particularly during times when the world can seem ugly and full of evil. While I personally only use Instagram and have stopped using Facebook, I acknowledge that there is potential for social media to be used for good, and nimcels are a great example of this.
The Washington Post recently featured an article about nimcels, which are micro-celebrities in specific online communities. While not necessarily famous in a mainstream sense, these nimcels hold significant importance to their niche audience. I found it interesting when Bryce Wollman, a nimcel I wasn't familiar with, stated that creating content to become mainstream goes against the nimcel ethos. This made me happy because I don't want to use social media to sell products or earn with discount codes. Instead, I want to share my vision of life and art and inspire others to follow their passions, just like I do in my workshops (read about or book my next workshop session here!). It's fulfilling to share my interests and connect with like-minded people, and I hope to continue doing so.
The emergence of nimcels is seen as a positive development, offering a refreshing alternative to mainstream influencers who have been tainted by commercialism. Nimcels are seen as valuable representatives of hyper-segmentation, catering to the specific tastes, interests, and behaviours of niche online communities. This is exemplified by Spotify's Niche Mixes, which take personalization to the extreme (did you see it on your account?) As someone who uses Spotify, I've been impressed with the algorithm's ability to curate brilliant playlists tailored to my interests. On my Spotify, I have brilliant titles proposed by the algorithm. It's hard to choose the best, but the Dogs Pet Calming mix, Anti Anxiety mix, and Hopeless Romantic Soft mix brought a tear to my eye.
I've been contemplating the idea of being more active on social media lately (who knows when I’ll change my mind again?) as I believe that artists can inspire communities and serve as nimcels. While some may view catering to a niche audience as limiting, I've come to realize that it can actually be a positive thing. A recent street art tour I took in Brick Lane (London) reinforced this belief, as I was struck by the power of art and how it can influence and transform communities. Street art is a medium that can raise awareness and spread positive social messages, and it serves as a vibrant representation of local identity. It's truly inspiring to witness how artists can use their talents to make a difference in the world. Look at this:
The artist states “I’m aware of how meaningless the online support is to the brave people of Ukraine fighting for their lives and their country but I still hope this little tribute will help somehow.” I found it incredibly beautiful and I think Woskerski is a nimcel. With no doubt. (If you want to make the tour yourself, please book it here and say that Bri sends you! The sessions run with a Pay What You Can system)
As we wrap up this month's newsletter, I want to express how much I appreciate your support and engagement - especially for ‘Losing Your Ears’ date 0, it has been amazing!
I truly believe that artists are nimcels and that they can change the world for the better. Whether it's through music, dance, visual art, or any other medium, artists have the power to inspire, uplift, and bring people together. But every one of us can! By sharing our talents and our voices, we can make a positive impact on the world around us.
I invite you to join me on Instagram, where I'll be sharing more of my artistic journey and connecting with like-minded individuals who are also passionate about making a difference. Let's use social media as a force for good, spreading positivity and kindness wherever we go. And above all, let's remember to be good human beings - to treat each other with compassion and respect, to be open to new ideas and perspectives, and to always strive to make the world a better place.
Thank you for being a part of this community, and I look forward to connecting with you again soon! B.
